Safe & Sound Protocol

Safe & Sound Protocol

What is the SSP?

Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP), is a five-day auditory intervention designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience. Based on Dr. Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, by calming the physiological and emotional state, the door is opened for improved communication and more successful therapy.

As a certified SSP Practitioner and certified Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner, I am specially trained to provide the delivery of this protocol to individuals of various ages.

The SSP is a research-based therapy showing significant results in just five days in the following areas:

  • Anxiety and trauma related challenges
  • Social and emotional difficulties
  • Stressors that impact social engagement
  • Inattention
  • Auditory sensitivities

Emotional and physiological state are critical to how we approach the task at hand. So when you have better state control, not only can you be more socially engaged, you are more open to therapy. Better state regulation improves therapeutic outcomes.

This non-invasive intervention involves listening to music that has been processed specifically to retune the nervous system (regulating state) to introduce a sense of safety and the ability to socially engage. This allows the client to better interpret not only human speech, but, importantly, the emotional meaning of language. Once interpersonal interactions improve, spontaneous social behaviors and an enhanced ability to learn, self-regulate and engage are often seen.

The Safe & Sound Protocol can be received by children, adolescents, and adults.

Information on receiving the SSP:

The SSP is available Monday – Friday**.

**The protocol consists of 5 consecutive days of listening to specialized music through headphones for 1 hour per day in my office. You (and your child) must be available to come to my office for 5 days straight.**

The listening sessions are delivered in person in my office in the Pasadena area. I create a safe, quiet atmosphere along with quiet, analog activities like drawing, coloring, Play-Doh, Legos, etc. that the client can take part in while listening. The client can also bring a favorite pillow or stuffed animal and relax while listening. In some cases, I may also provide some simple somatic activities to support the client in settling their nervous system before beginning listening to the music.

The client wears over-the-ear (cup) headphones while listening to specially adapted popular music for 1 hour per day. In some cases, we may need to work up to an hour of listening time. In this case, that may mean that some listening sessions will last more than 60 minutes. If you or your child are sensitive to headphones, you can begin to orient yourself to this aspect by wearing headphones (not earbuds) for short periods each day, then building up time with the headphones until you are comfortable for 60 minutes at a time.

The parent or a safe caregiver may be in the room during the intervention, but we will not be speaking out loud during listening time.

  • Day 1:  Plan for between 90 minutes to 2 hours for the first listening session.
  • Days 2-4: Allow between 75-90 minutes. One hour of this time is meant to be the listening session.

  • $250 for initial consultation, including intake and the first listening session.
  • $100 for each of the 4 additional listening sessions that are required.
  • Total Cost $650

SCHEDULING: To discuss the Safe & Sound Protocol for your child (or for yourself), please schedule a SSP Discovery Session by clicking here. The SSP Discovery Session is approximately 20 minutes. We will meet over the phone, discuss your specific needs, and determine whether this intervention is a good fit for you or your child. If we agree to move forward, we’ll schedule at that time.
